A legislative proposal to allow guns in schools is circulating at the Capitol. State Senator Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin) and Representative Robert Brooks (R-Saukville) want to allow concealed weapons on public school grounds, and in classrooms — if local school boards approve. A public hearing on their bill could be held by month’s end.
Lazich and Brooks say only state concealed carry permit holders could have guns on school property, and that the bill would prevent them from breaking the law when they have guns in their vehicles as they drop off and pick up kids from school.
Brooks says he would feel horrible if teachers couldn’t defend themselves during a school shooting incident.
Speaking to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett called the proposal “insane” and asked if there are any Republicans who want to get serious about gun violence.
